We are committed to bringing the very best horses we have to offer to the Rancho Rio Sale. When it became necessary to replace Bon Jovi, there was only one horse we felt truly worthy of stepping into that spot—Pappy Gun, “Coon.”
Coon is more than just another good rope horse to us. Rodey started hauling him as a 4-year-old, and together they’ve built a journey that has taken them to some of the biggest stages in team roping. From placing at the Riata Buckle, the World Series Finale, the Spicer Gripp Team Roping, the BFI, the NTR National FInals, and the Cheyenne World Series, to countless ropings in between, Coon has proven time and time again that he belongs wherever the best are competing.
Horses with Coon’s level of honesty, consistency, and ability is hard to find—and even harder to buy. It’s even rarer to see one like him offered for sale. Adding to his value, Coon is by the outstanding Tongue River Ranch, Riata Stallion, Pepcid, bringing proven bloodlines behind the talent.
What truly sets Coon apart, though, is the kind of horse he is every single day. He is as gentle as they come—100% safe, with no bad habits and not a mean bone in his body. He is smooth to ride and the kind of horse that makes you look forward to swinging a leg over him.
Coon is the type you can leave off for months, load in the trailer, and go compete at the biggest roping of the year with complete confidence. He is fancy broke—light, responsive, and easy to ride. Coon doesn’t require a PhD in roping and riding to be successful with him in the trailer.
In fact, just today he was ridden by ropers rated from a 3 to an 8, and every run he made—on both ends—was outstanding.
Coon is also exceptional on the head side. He scores consistently, runs to the steer with confidence, rates naturally, and finishes with the signature Wilson move that Rodey is known for.
Horses like Coon are rare—not just because of what they can do in the arena, but because of the kind of heart and character they carry with them.
He has been a special part of our program, and our hope is that he finds a home with someone who will appreciate him as much as we always have.
